Cuba & Alaska (2025) by Yegor Troyanovsky
SYNOPSIS
Inseparable best-friends “Cuba” and “Alaska” are medics on the frontline battlefield in the fight for Ukraine.Part of a small, mobile team of fighters, the two medics face each day with a singularly funny and dark sense of humor; a trait that endears them to their unit-mates as much as it helps them work in the face of constant death, destruction and mayhem. Cuba dreams of her own fashion line of ‘futuristic female warriors’, calling Alaska her ‘frontline muse’: She wants to go back to the pre-war times, to when the only thing that mattered was the music. Yet, deep down inside both soldiers know there is no ‘going back’; there was no pause button to put their former lives on hold. Still, neither is quite yet ready to give up on their dreams for the future. When Alaska is hit by a piece of shrapnel (nearly costing her life, at worst, or her ability to walk, at best), Cuba is left on her own. Invited to show her fashion designs in Paris for Fashion Week, Cuba’s childhood dream does come alive, if only for a moment. Later, when she visits her mother in Spain after the show, Cuba can feel the childhood dream already disappearing. As Alaska struggles to recover, Cuba returns to the front only to be surprised by falling in love with Shepa, a sharpshooter from another unit. Can love, and all the future promise it brings, find a foothold in war?
