Birthday (2025)
by Ivaylo Penchev
SYNOPSIS:
Grandma Genoveva has been bedridden for many years, has no loved ones and wants to die. Right on her birthday, the seventy-year-old prisoner - "veteran" Vasil, goes free and his first job is to commit a robbery in order to return to his only "family" in prison. While searching for valuables in Genoveva's apartment, she suddenly and unexpectedly meets him and makes a deal, according to which Vasil must kill her, and in return for this "merciful" service, she will bequeath everything to him. However, unforeseen circumstances soon delay the deal.
High-ranking officials unexpectedly intervene and sensationally "discover" old medieval manuscripts, dug up from forgotten places in the underground of downtown Sofia. The plan, which initially seems like an ordinary criminal offense, turns out to be one of the most important battles in the lives of the three friends, the former inmate Vasil and grandmother Genoveva, in the name of ensuring that little Raya can walk and fulfill her dreams.
Sometimes a birthday doesn't just mean celebrating an anniversary. It is possible that life and circumstances to turn so, that a "Birthday" becomes a metaphor for people's transformation.
